I got the deck floor re-stained and it had a day and a half to dry before it rained. The rain beaded up on top so I suppose that the project was a success. We’ll see how it looks after a winter of snow and ice and wet.
This is for Mama Pea – I used Behr premium stain in #502 redwood.
As much as I like the color red, if I had been starting from scratch I might have chosen something a little less red and more on the brown end. That wasn’t really an option because as worn as the flooring was, the top of the deck was redwood so unless I was going to make this into an enormous project that included sanding / planing every single slat on the upper structure, changing the color was not a real option.
See what I mean?
As I mentioned before, the newly re-stained floor made the upright posts look somewhat shabby. So I restained the upright posts as well… which is when I noticed that the slats and upper support beams looked pretty sad as well. At that point I decided to look down and admire the flooring some more! There are some missing and cracked slats that need to be replaced. At present I can do three – my BIL was visiting last year and replaced a few and left three extras in the garage. But I might wait until spring to take on that project…
