It’s going to be a hot day today, but I still might have gone out to do some garden work early if my windows hadn’t looked like this when I got up:
So I decided I had enough to do inside instead!
When we purchased the house, we knew there would be things that we’d want to update, particularly in the kitchen and master bath. The kitchen isn’t too bad, but it has the original countertops (which are in remarkably good condition for their age). One of the first things we’ll probably replace is the oven – I prefer a gas stove. The big question is what color?
This is my kitchen as it looks now:

Another angle:
Overall, it’s a fantastic space – light and spacious (excuse my junk – still have work to do!). There is an eat-in kitchen area to the right of this view. Can you believe the cabinet space? I can’t even really use it all because I’d need a ladder to reach some of it! All of the lower cabinets have pull-out shelves too – a luxury I don’t know how I ever lived without.
As I said, the first item we are likely to purchase is a stove. But what color? I am leaning toward stainless steel because a white stove always shows every splatter and spill. However, I’m not so fond of stainless steel refrigerators because they show every fingerprint. How much do you think it matters if they match? And given that my cabinets have more of a shabby chic thing going on, would stainless steel really go with them? I also have to give some thought to what sort of countertop I might eventually want. These decisions always start to snowball because one thing will determine how you do the next, etc.
Suggestions welcome!
Just for reference, here’s what the original decor looked like (now hidden behind the fridge).
I am profoundly grateful to whoever it was who painted all of the cabinetry and wall paneling!

Wow, that looks like a GREAT kitchen! NEVER too much cabinet space. (But I’m with you on the tall ones you really can’t use.) Are you going to keep the cabinets white? I think I’d make that decision before deciding on color/finish for stove and refrigerator. I’m fond of white enamel over stainless steel. Stainless steel does indeed show fingerprints . . . plus it’s GRAY. Not my favorite color for cheerful decor!
by Mama Pea July 6th, 2012 at 8:37 pmI may eventually change out a couple of the cabinet doors over the counter next to the fridge for glass door so it is more of a showcase for my goblets and other glassware, but otherwise I like the white cabinets. They keep the kitchen so bright.
I’m still wavering on the appliance color. My husband also told me that the salesman at Sears said there were more colors available too. Maybe I can get a RED stove!
by Jenyfer July 7th, 2012 at 9:31 amI think you should go with a color – red, aqua, something fun. Not stainless steel, I agree with your thoughts on whether that goes with your ‘shabby chic’ cabinetry. Black is too strange in your white kitchen. So a fun color should be considered!! And I wish I had all those cabinets!
by Shellie July 7th, 2012 at 9:46 amNo red in the store – only black, white, stainless, and cream
I ended up getting a stainless stove and microwave hood and I think it will look good – especially once we can save up for the new countertops!
by Jenyfer July 7th, 2012 at 1:05 pmI may well eventually paint the walls a color though
by Jenyfer July 7th, 2012 at 1:16 pmI forgot to mention that all the lower cabinets have pullout shelves too!
