I buy from a farm at the edge of our county. It actually isn't any more expensive and I know where the food is coming from. I like to buy local when I can.

A very thought provoking, interesting piece you have written here today. Of course, I am very much the hunter/gatherer type anyway. But, not all of us realize that just because it says organic, it is necessarily good. I try to do a lot organic to go with my other lifestyle. :)

Elissa - it's a great read and doesn't so much inflict guilt as it does really open your eyes to things. But at the end of the day, all you can do is your best to eat both ethically and well, given what is available to you.

My husband knows someone who was toying with being a vegetarian, but then realized that her only objection to meat was the modern American farming practices. So she only eats meat that died happy--that is, game her family has hunted. She has family in Maine, so she gets a lot of moose, I think.

We have been trying to eat less meat for precisely the reasons this book mentions. I haven't read the book. I'm afraid to, for fear I'll be burdened with guilt every time I go to the market. We have very limited options here for getting sustainable, environmentally friendly produce. When it takes hours of driving to get past jam-packed suburbia, you're not going to find an organic (government-approved or not) farm within a reasonable distance.
