Seizing the Moment

My internet is up and running as usual this morning. I even managed to make a phone call using Yahoo Messenger which I haven’t been able to do for ages. Too bad it was the middle of the night in the US so I only got to talk to a customer service rep at Lands End.

Anyway, I felt like I ought to take advantage of the lightning fast access and post something here because I fear this is only a temporary state of affairs. One thing about living in Egypt is you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Only thing is, I got nothing. Doesn’t it just figure?

I went to my book group last night to discuss our last selection, which I did not enjoy, and to choose our next one. They ended up choosing a literary classic, one which I read in college, and you guessed it – I didn’t care for it. But, in the spirit of the group and with the idea that perhaps I may have matured in the intervening years, I’m going to read it again and see if perhaps it goes down a bit better the second time around.

At least the food and the company was good. And the book after this one is my pick. Wonder what they’ll think of it? So far I’ve liked the one book none of them cared for and haven’t liked the one they all loved. I guess it’s a good thing that there’s at least one dissenting voice or there wouldn’t be much to discuss, but I wonder why it is that it’s always me?

(Don’t answer that!)

Red Herrings

I really love to look at the searches that bring unsuspecting people to my blog. Aside from all the French people looking for the chain clothing store “Jenyfer”, here are a few of my more recent favorites:
Capricorn man return messages – Is this really zodiac related?

Why men get aggravated – Oohh! I have lots of tips on how to do that!

Why men have no clue of the girl – Not so surprising really. We’re complicated creatures.

Good things about air pollution – If you find anything, let me know.

Facts why clowns are scary – The makeup, the hideous noses, the overblown grins and floppy shoes. Shudder. What more do you need to know??

Scary clowns Scientific American – Not sure they’ve done a quantifiable study

Pajamas with pockets – Why? Again, I ask why do pajamas *need* pockets??

Cold winter in Cairo – Yes, it has been.

One, two, three, four to 100 – I have *no* idea what they were trying to find with that search but I doubt it was my birthday post

Internet Blues and Fun with Shopping

You might have noticed that I’ve been a little quieter than usual lately. Internet access on my half of the world has been severely limited by damage to two major undersea cables that connect Europe to Egypt and Egypt to the rest of the region. I saw a news story that speculated it might have been done by a ship anchor. I’m thinking that perhaps when they do the repairs, they need to bury those cables a tad DEEPER.

I really really hate not having internet. Though I do get more done in my real life when I’m not plugged into my computer all day long.

This weekend I had to go shopping. I don’t mind shopping for myself or for my own children, but I don’t really enjoy buying presents for birthday parties, especially when I don’t really know the child in question and there is no stated theme to the party.

So I was out shopping, trying to find something that would have wide appeal and yet be unique and interesting – and not too expensive. As I was browsing, I saw a scooter. I had no intention of buying a scooter for the birthday boy but the sales blurb on the side of the box caught my attention:

This board changes you. You can become light more stylish than whom. Everyone accepts this fact. You will all challenge early.

I have no idea what that means – in any language. Is it just me, or does that sounds like a cryptic fortune cookie message? And yet the blurb did its job – I really, really wanted to buy that scooter. Not sure I want to “challenge early” because that doesn’t really sound so good, but I could do with being “more stylish than whom.”

Also found an “entrapment cap” Any guesses as to what that might be? Sounds like a pest control system or a birth control device, doesn’t it? In reality, a swim cap.

I had more fun shopping for birthday presents than I ever have before. In the end I skipped both the scooter and the swim cap and went with my son’s request and bought a remote control monster truck. Not necessarily unique but the price was right and the boys were happy.

After all the shopping fun was done, unable to procrastinate further with blog hopping, I sat down and did some writing. A lot of writing. It felt so good I wonder why I don’t get seriously down to work more often. I may have to give some thought to unplugging the internet once they finally get it back up and running again.

Nah.
